2022 Volvo C40, Recharge Comes With ₦25Million Price Tag, Free Charging

Volvo has set lofty electrification goals for its future, with a target of 50% of its global vehicle sales from fully electric models by 2025. The first fully-electric Volvo was the 2021 XC40 Recharge, and now the automaker has revealed more information on its second pure EV, the 2022 C40 Recharge. The new SUV is essentially the XC40, but with a sleeker, coupelike roofline and a higher price than its sibling.

Pricing and Features

Volvo has announced that the C40 will start at ₦25m (all prices include destination charges) before any federal tax credits. With nearly identical performance specs, the C40 Recharge carries a substantial premium over the 2021 XC40 Recharge, priced from ₦2.5m

Shared with the XC40 Recharge, the C40 gets dual-motor electric drive powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery.  The crossover makes a comparable 402 horsepower and 487 pounds-feet of torque, gets an expected range of over 200 miles and a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds.

Available solely in the Ultimate trim for 2022, the C40 sports a leather-free interior to show off Volvo’s sustainability pursuits. It also gets an Android operating system, an oversized panoramic moonroof, LED lighting, a 360-degree camera system, 20-inch wheels and Volvo’s Pilot Assist advanced driver assistance technology.

The Volvo C40’s starting price of nearly ₦25m is noticeably higher than many new EV entrants, such asthe Volkswagen ID.4 ($41,190) and Ford Mustang Mach-E (₦19m). The Tesla Model Y also undercuts the C40 with a starting price of ₦23m for its Long Range model.

Volvo Picks Up the Charging Tab

To offset some potential sticker shock, Volvo says its 2022 EVs will come with 250 kwh of complimentary charging on Electrify America’s network of 635 fast-charging stations; the offer is good for the first three years of ownership. After EV owners use up the free credits, Volvo will pick up the cost of Electrify America’s Pass Plus membership for one year, which offers discounts on charging rates.

Online-Only Ordering

Shoppers won’t be able to test-drive or buy the C40 from a dealership, but they can reserve the vehicle on Volvo’s website via the automaker’s online-only ordering process and a ₦200k refundable deposit. Production of the all-electric C40 begins in the fall
