Ferrari 488 Spider in a long line of mid-engined Ferraris, the drool-worthy 488GTB is an exotic two-seater that’s worthy of being celebrated with a poster on your bedroom wall.
Its styling is shaped by aerodynamics as much as it is by its talented Italian designers. In addition to the standard 488 coupe, there’s a retractable-hardtop Spider and the new-for-2019, harder-core, coupe-only Pista model that turns up the heat even more.
With a mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8, the 488GTB generates a sonorous wail and ferocious acceleration all the way to 8000 rpm, where it makes 661 horsepower. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is the sole transmission; we estimate it’s capable of a zero-to-60-mph time of 3.0 seconds.
Ferrari’s adaptive suspension is relatively compliant without sacrificing handling. The Pista model is even more powerful and makes 710 horsepower and should leap to 60 mph in less than three seconds.
Pista means track in Italian and this special edition is certainly capable of tearing it up with rivals such as the McLaren 720S and the Lamborghini Aventador.
Fine leather, suede, carbon fiber, and metal accents cover nearly everything inside its racy, driver-focused cabin.
The interior is spacious for two adults but don’t expect much in the way of infotainment or connectivity. There’s no central radio display;
most everything is controlled through a digital readout in the gauge cluster via buttons and toggles on the steering wheel, including the 488’s various driving modes and the bright red ignition switch.
